PGA Tour

Russell Knox had an opportunity to win for a second consecutive week at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, after his massive win in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions. He arrived at the 18th tee with a one-stroke lead, but a trip to a fairway bunker led to a trip to the greenside rough, which gave way to a bogey and a three-man playoff with Jason Bohn and Graeme McDowell. Knox struggled again in the playoff, tugging his approach left of the green.

Just prior, McDowell had done his best to end the playoff with an eagle. His approach landed 15 feet shy of the hole, then rolled tantalizingly close to the edge of the cup before trickling a mere 3 feet past. Doing what McDowell does best, he tapped in for birdie and his first tour win in more than a year. Two shots out of the playoff in fourth place was third-round leader Derek Fathauer, who struggled out of the blocks with a first-hole bogey and traded +1 and -1 holes all day long.

LPGA Tour

Inbee Park did what Inbee does best: She took the third-round lead at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, withstood a run by a playing partner (in this case, Carlota Ciganda, who carded a Sunday 63) and closed with birdies on the final two holes to claim another LPGA Tour title.

Park clinched her fifth win of the season and 17th overall on the LPGA Tour in a manner she has nearly patented: bogey-free final round, highlighted by a large number of birdies. Each time Ciganda made a gallant effort to take the lead, Inbee responded with a birdie. When Ciganda finally cracked with a bogey on the 16th hole, Park reclaimed the momentum with birdies seven and eight on the day.

With the win, Park occupies the top spot as the LPGA Tour reaches its final event of the season, the CME Group Tour Championship. Park will square off with Lydia Ko in the battle for tour supremacy this week in Naples, Florida.

European Tour

In an event that probably doesn’t toll a mournful bell for a golfing generation, Sweden’s Kristoffer Broberg snatched his first European Tour victory, the BMW Masters, in a playoff with Patrick Reed. Despite threats from Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose, the tournament came down to a single, extra hole.

Broberg had previously won on the European Challenge Tour, so the putt he had for victory in extra time had to feel a bit familiar. Playing partner Reed had mounted the most extraordinary challenge, capped by a stunning hole-out for eagle on No. 15. Broberg held steady, however, and played his approach to 15 feet on the first playing of the 18th in extra time. The putt was never off line and Broberg looked skyward in disbelief.

Yang remains an amateur

Say what? Gunn Yang ignored the temptation to turn pro and returned to college and amateur golf? Yep. Yang, the 2014 U.S. Amateur champion, decided to give pro golf a try, sort of. He played a full year of professional events as an amateur, then decided to return to San Diego State University as a junior this fall. Yang’s recognition of the pressure he put on himself to succeed and the work he needed to do to get to the next level were the driving force behind his return to school and amateur golf. Yang averaged 72 over the four fall tournaments he played this semester.

In an athletic world where athletes and parents are blinded by unrealistic promises, Yang’s maturity is a beacon for young golfers to emulate.
