Wagner Tops After Round Three

Round three of the Shell Houston Open ended with Johnson Wagner still atop the leaderboard.

Adam Scott withdrew to find a horizontal position and recover from a worsening illness. Chad Campbell moved into second a shot behind, and Bob Estes and Charley Hoffman find themselves two back of Mr. Wagner. None of the above has yet qualified for the Masters, so there is that on the line as well. As if just winning a tournament isn’t enough to think about, they sleep tonight with visions of Magnolia Lane dancing in their heads.

“It’s hard not to think about it,” Wagner said. “But I’m not too worried about it. If I were to win here, then obviously that would be just an incredible bonus.” Hmmm, seems about as understated as one could get, leading me to wonder that if he’s almost unconscious on the outside how strung out are the insides? My guess is those insides resemble a man on several cups of coffee with a Red Bull chaser. Hopefully wired means inspired.

Steve Stricker posted another 66 matching his first round score and sandwiched around a smooth 76. Just like the weather; nice and crappy and nice.

Phil Mickelson sort of sputtered around again, although he made a few more putts today than the previous two days.

For all practical purposes it appears as if someone will not only win this tournament and the invite to the Masters. Mr. Wagner, Campbell, Estes, or Hoffman all have the opportunity. We’ll see who can stay functional most often come Sunday.

As an aside, John Daly withdrew again because of injury. It’s my belief Mr. Daly seek more thorough medical assistance than he seems to have pursued to this time. Dear John, I think it’s time to put the bottle down and face the demons. They are winning and it’s no fun to watch.

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
