European Tour – Portuguese Open
Another week of golf and another play-off on the European PGA Tour. This time saw Frenchman Gregory Bourdy defeat David Howell and Alistair Forsyth at the third extra hole of the Portuguese Open at Oitavos Dunes.
Having taken a four shot lead into the final round and playing with enviable consistency all week including equaling the course record with a 63 , Bourdy looked practically assured of victory at the start of the day. An appalling 3 over front 9 appeared to have dropped him out of the running but he dragged himself back into contention with a run of birdies on the back 9. Howell, returning to the sort of form that saw him in the World Top 10 and become one of the few people to hold off Tiger Woods down the stretch, shot an wonderful 64 on the final day to set the early target of -18 which only Bourdy and Fosyth could match. Forsyth played his way into the playoff with an excellent 66, including birdies on the 17th and 18th, the last being a wonderful 25 foot snaking putt that eventually crawled into the hole.
After all 3 made par on the 73rd hole, a poor drive from Forsyth saw him only able to record a bogey which left him on the sidelines while at the next Bourdy drained a 12 footer for par to keep the playoff going. At the 75th hole, Howell’s second shot was pulled long and left of the green. With Bordy already at the front of the green and within easy 2 putt distance, Howell was forced to play a high flop shot from a bare lie that he could only get to the fringe. Needing the putt to stay in the play-off and having watched Bourdy play his first putt to tap-in distance, Howell could only watch as the ball squeaked past the left edge to hand the victory to Bourdy.
This is the second European PGA victory for the Frenchman, coming after his maiden win in the 2007 Mallorca Classic.
With the second major of 2026 now behind us, the PGA Tour arrives in Texas for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Aaron Rai upset the odds to win his first major championship on Sunday at Aronimink, firing a final round of 5-under par to see off his competitors and claim the winner’s check for $3,690,000.
Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley were the best of the chasing pack, with both men sharing runner-up spot which was good enough for each to receive a check for $1,804,000.
