Tiger Woods shot a first-round 64 at the Deutsche Bank Championship to tie for the early lead with Jeff Overton at 7-under.

Starting on No. 10 at TPC Boston, Woods opened with birdies on two of his first four holes. He lipped out an eagle try on the par-5 18th hole, a birdie that started a streak of six in a row from No. 18 to No. 5. Woods’ lone bogey came on No. 9, his last hole, where he missed the green and failed to get up and down.

“I played really well today,” Woods said after the round. “Hit a lot of good shots. On top of that, I putted well. It was a nice combination.”

Woods has opened strong in most marquee PGA Tour events this year, including the four majors and last week’s Barclays Championship. His 64 is his second lowest round of the year, his lowest coming in the final round of The Honda Classic where his Sunday 62 put him in a tie for second place, two shots behind Rory McIlroy. With the exception of his three wins at The Arnold Palmer Invitation, The Memorial and the AT&T National, Woods has faltered consistently on the weekend. Will his top form last into the final rounds at the Deutschse Bank?

You can catch coverage of the event Friday and Saturday on Golf Channel from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST. Round 3 action begins on Sunday (remember it’s a Monday finish) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Golf Channel with NBC picking up coverage from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Final-round coverage is on Golf Channel from 11:30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m., with NBC picking up coverage from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

I would say given his play this year and including shooting this 64, Tiger is in very good shape to be competitive at the Ryder Cup. Match play should suit him just fine. If he has one bad hole it won’t matter as much as with medal play.

With both sides being extremely strong, I am anticipating a very exciting Ryder Cup. Who will win? It is too close to call but as always in competition, someone will be the hero of the event or one team will have the luck go their way. Either way, in the end golf fans are the winners.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
