David Toms is back on top through one round. He shot a five under 67.

David Toms is back on top of the leader board after firing a five under 67 to lead the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Toms started on the back nine, where a loan bogey joined five birdies leading to a 32 on the back and a 35 on the front. Phil Mickelson lurks just one shot back and Zach Johnson leads a pack of players at four under.

"Today was a good day. Obviously conditions were perfect for us when we first started off this morning. You know, I shot 4-under my first nine holes, which was pretty solid for that back nine. I gave one right back at No. 1 from the middle of the fairway, I three-putted…It does feel good to play solid golf again. I played today with last week’s winner (Adam Scott), who’s a heck of a player, so just trying to keep up with him. I couldn’t get within 30 yards of him off the tee, but I scored pretty well. It’s just, like I said, nice to be back in the media center after a good round of golf."

Phil Mickelson decided to break in a new putter with a trial by fire. He is playing a putter that is an inch and a half longer than his normal 33.5 inch putter. He says that it is making it a little more comfortable to putt as he doesn’t have to bend over quite as much. “I made a lot of putts there, but I didn’t feel good with the putter. They went in, but I didn’t feel confident with the way they were rolling,” Mickelson said. “Today was a different day for me on the greens. I mean, not only did I make a lot, but the ones that missed were tracking and coming close to the edges. So I feel like heading in here, I’m actually putting better."

The traditionally strong field at the Wachovia has a conspicuous player missing. Mr. World Number One. Tiger is at home recovering from knee surgery, so the electricity that followed Tiger and Michael Jordan last year into the tournament is missing. “This one he usually does play and he would have defended here, I’m sure. I think the strength of the field for this event does offset it a little bit," said Adam Scott

The rest of the weekend is shaping up for a nice Friday and isolated thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully the rain will hold off and allow all players to get into a rhythm. “If we get favorable conditions for the rest of the week and no more rain, I think the course on Saturday and Sunday could be playing extremely fast,” said Rory Sabbatini.

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
