Prediction: Tiger Woods is sitting out 2016 to prepare to win the 2017 Masters

TigerWoodsPracticing

Optimistic thinking? Lunacy? There’s a great debate going on in this thread started by user 23under. He suggests that Tiger Woods circled the wagons when he was able to return to hitting balls earlier this year, determined not to return to the game this season, but rather to devote all his energies toward preparation for the 2017 Masters.

Think his theory is absurd? Many WRXers do. But to see the full range of replies, you have to see the thread.

Why do golfers take their gloves off to putt?

5_steps_to_building_confidence_in_your_putting

Ah, the eternal question. Everybody on tour does it… but why? Habit? Custom? To “improve feel”? Cubby Woods begs the question: Why do golfers take their gloves off to putt?

Jswaykos offered this interesting (and aesthetically sensible) rationale: “To be perfectly honest, I take it off mainly to get a little sun on my left hand… the difference between my glove and non-glove hand is on the verge of noticeable.”

An interesting discussion with some unexpected responses. Check it out and defend your gloved or non-gloved putting.

In praise of the shorter, heavier driver

gmdriver

It’s really not appropriate to paraphrase forum stalwart Duffner’s Waggle, so here’s part of what he had to say a couple of years back about his switch to a shorter, heavier driver in a thread that’s recently gathered a bit of steam.

“After a particularly bad driving display while playing a quick morning 9 with vbb at a local course we’re members of, and I found a Ping PWR 80X shaft to go in my i25 head that would play at 44″. I was desperate and the price was right, so I figured what the heck. Never one to shy away from a bst deal, I pulled the trigger, and finally got out for a round with my new short, heavy driver on Saturday.

Could very well be the placebo effect, but OH MY! The results were tremendous. Very little lost distance since I seemed to be hitting everything out of the middle of the face. MUCH tighter dispersion, increased confidence, better ball flight and TONS more confidence. And it didn’t take long to get adjusted. It actually felt like that’s how a driver should be designed. Longer than a fwy wood, but not the 46″ many are playing their drivers at in search or a few more yards.”

What are your thoughts on going short and heavy with the big stick. Check out the thread and let us know.

Hot takes on Posnanski’s open letter

SpiethOlympics

Esteemed scribe Joe Posnanski penned a satirical open letter to the golfers who took a pass on the Olympics. Needless to say, his central thesis that McIlroy, Spieth, etc., “blew it” and the Olympics are a “big (bleeping) deal” offer a firm stance to say the least.

User Ping Meister posted the letter, throwing his support between Posnanski and his sentiments. If you want to check out the text and the bevy of takes from the GolfWRX community, see the thread.

From the classifieds…

Jack Nicklaus never took his glove off to putt, and he wasn’t too bad as I recall.

20 years ago I had a bad case of the yips. A friend suggested that I should putt with my glove on; this to help me focus on the left hand and help take the emphasis away from the right. It worked, and I have putted with the glove on ever since.

From the moment i put the glove on, at the first tee, until i take it off to shake hands, it stays on my hand.

No time to do any of that sport. I’m 74 and I walk 18 in 3 hours 45 minute.

No one on this forum putts as good as Billy Casper and Isao Aoki did, who putted glove on. it doesn’t matter. Hacks on here just want to emulate what they see on weekend on the telly- 5 practice swings, walking down fairway with glove hanging off back pocket, 2 minute putting routines, fist pumping.

Which of Tiger’s major winning irons are your favorite? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing their favorite major winning irons used by Tiger Woods. WRXer ‘golferdude54’ kicks off the thread saying:

“Mizuno MP 14/29. Titleist 681T. Nike Forged Blades. TaylorMade P7TW.

Among these irons that helped Tiger win 15 majors, which is your favorite in terms of looks?”

And our members have been naming their favorites and why in response.

Here are a couple of posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • SwingBlade: “I prefer the early blades he played and the more recent TM TW’s especially because after Tiger had his major behavioral setbacks, part of Nikes support payback was making Tiger play a Nike putter and cease using his beloved uniquely customized Scotty putter.”
  • ProjectX: “This (Nike Forged Blades) and there’s not even a close second.”

Have I just found the holy grail with this hybrid? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing a recent find by one WRXer. ‘Speeder717’ has just got his hands on an Adams Idea Pro hybrid with a Midas shaft and V55 grip, and has documented his find in the forums saying:

“There’s just something about old tour gear that still hits different for a lot of us who’ve been around WRX forever. Before every tour setup was posted on Instagram five minutes after a round, you had to dig for this stuff. You’d spend hours going through used bins at the local range, scrolling classified ads, or checking Gypsy Golf hoping some random listing would turn out to be something special.

That’s what made the hunt fun.

And when it comes to players with recognizable gear, Bernhard Langer has always been near the top of the list. His bag has barely changed in years. The putter is untouchable. The G400 somehow refuses to leave. And then there are the Adams Idea Pro hybrids with the Midas shafts and V55 grips that instantly make longtime gear guys stop scrolling.

I was lucky enough to grab one off eBay recently, and the more I looked at it, the more things started lining up with Langer. The build, the details, the overall wear… it just has that look. If you’ve followed his setup over the years, you start comparing tiny details from old WITB photos, looking at grip setups, lead tape placement, wear patterns, all trying to connect the dots.

Maybe it’s a legit gamer, maybe it’s just built exactly like one. Either way, that’s almost beside the point.

For a lot of us older WRXers, this is the stuff that keeps the hobby fun. The stories, the searching, the possibility that a random club sitting in a listing somewhere might actually have some history behind it. That feeling never really goes away.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and reactions in our forum.

Here are a couple of posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • kwxsports: “I still play a couple of those hybrids. Cool find.”
  • EastpointeCC: “If the wear pattern is the size of a dime and there’s no idiot marks. Could be his.”

Why I still love my 20-year-old irons – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to a post from a WRXer who still can’t get enough of his 20-year-old irons. ‘Kennapsi’ has been unable to replace his Callaway X-forged irons, and kicks off the conversation saying:

“I just can’t find a better set of irons than my 20-year-old Callaway X-forged irons. Boy have I tried…. T100, iblade, Taylormade… the list goes on!!! I somehow feel a guilt and just want to spend money on a new set…

I can’t even blame the groove rule and say they are non conforming as that rule has expired in the UK now… I play county events and nobody ever mentioned it anyway…To make it worse, can you see any similarities between Miura TC 201 and X-forged 2007?

Do I need help, or should I just play them?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BowMain42: “Coming from a guy that refuses to give up his MP-60’s (when he’s not playing stuff even older), I’d say don’t worry about it. Then again, the WRXer in me says ‘replace them anyway just because'”
  • iNeedMoreGolf: “My X forged 18 mb/cb are that way for me. The closest thing I think I’ve come across is P7MC by TaylorMade.”
  • jplroper: “When something works, just run with it.”
