The Italian Open saw yet another player record their maiden victory in South African Hennie Otto. Otto’s score of 25 under par at the Castello di Tolcinasco GC in Milan was only 1 shot less than the 73 year old tournament record but the low scoring was not just restricted to the winner as runner-up Oliver Wilson was only one shot back and third placed Robert Karlsson just a further shot back.

Otto’s 69 on Sunday was his highest score of the week, indicating how well he played but also how the pressure took its toll down the finishing stretch. Otto’s lead of 4 strokes going into the final round was slowly whittled down by Fisher’s determination, including 4 birdies in a row on the back nine.

Fisher’s 64 meant that Otto required a par at the last for victory. A bad shot left him in a horrendous position with the ball balanced at the lip of a bunker. With one foot in the bunker he played a stunning recovery to 6 feet and the victory.

It was Wilson’s sixth time as runner up and he might well ponder how things might have been different had he not damaged his putter on the second day, forcing him to use a wedge on the greens. Karlsson set a new tournament round with a 61in the second round but could not quite keep up that level of performance.

Fans of John Daly will have been pleasantly surprised by his 23rd place here but it was no less than justified by some excellent play.

WITB Time Machine: Phil Mickelson’s winning WITB, 2021 PGA Championship

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
