TaylorMade extends equipment deals with Jason Day, Dustin Johnson

The No. 1 and No. 2-ranked golfers in the world — Jason Day and Dustin Johnson — will continue to use TaylorMade golf equipment in 2017, the company announced. There is still no confirmation of what golf apparel brand each golfer will be wearing on the course next year.

Both Day and Johnson’s Adidas apparel contracts expire at the end of this season. At the moment they’re each required to wear Adidas golf apparel, but the Germany-based company’s plan to sell TaylorMade has complicated the typical arrangement of prominent TaylorMade golf equipment endorsers also wearing Adidas golf apparel.

ESPN reported last week that Jason Day has already signed an apparel deal with Nike worth approximately $10 million per year, becoming the first major TaylorMade Staffer to migrate to an Adidas competitor. While Olympic Gold Medalist Justin Rose re-signed with Adidas in June, Johnson’s future with Adidas is uncertain at this time.

Johnson, 32, signed his first deal with TaylorMade-Adidas in December 2007, and has won a PGA Tour event in eight of the nine seasons he’s been with the brand. He has recently risen to the upper echelon of the sport through his wins at the 2016 U.S. Open (his first major championship), WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and BMW Championship, which have enhanced his value.

Day, 28, had his breakthrough moment at the 2015 PGA Championship where he won his first major. He signed with TaylorMade-Adidas in 2006, rising from 666th to the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings as a brand endorser.

TaylorMade did not disclose the terms of the deals.

I couldn’t care less what anyone wears. The more ‘they’ push lunacy like payin 10mil to one guy to wear their crap the less likely I’ll be to pay an extra $20 a shirt to cover that.

Pretty much all ‘sports fabrics’ now are moisture wicking, breathable & pretty comfortable. Cotton or Silk aside, where washablity, colors not bleaching out after 4 rounds or collars not shriveling up, I’d rather just buy 8 new Hagen or Hogan shirts @ 20 each season – than 2 overpriced shirts that’ll never make it through season two without me trashing it somehow…

  After spending 45 years in the textile and apparel business I can tell you the shirts from A<B<C<D<E<F<and G are almost identical in fabric and construction. No one owns a sewing factory. They are all made by contractors in China, Viet Nam, Bangladesh, Jordan, wherever and they cost the marketers like Adidas and Nike less than $10 to buy, some as little as $6 and we pay up to $80 if the name on the label is fancy enough. Buy them at the discounters and save the big markups as you gain nothing. Paying $60-80 for a shirt makes as much sense as buying a new "miracle " $500 driver to get an additional 20 yards,, Both bogus…..

    Considering EVERY shirt in the marketplace costs $60-$80, your commentary doesn’t make much sense. The market drives the cost of goods, knowing how much it costs to produce it doesn’t really help anyone in the long run. If you’re going to make a comment, please provide some information that is relevant. Maybe this is your chance to start producing a great, $25 golf shirt for all of us to wear?

      Not sure where you shop, but you need to find a new store. $60-$80 for a shirt???? Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour all have outlet stores where i have never seen a price over $40. Walter Hagen line, FILA both under $30 most of the time.

  What exactly are you saying here? Fire up those stylish Hagen & Hogan shirts, nobody really cares. Sounds like you really need to learn how to wash your clothes better, not complain about how shirts are made. Hopefully, you keep focusing on YOUR wardrobe & stop proving how cheap you are.

    Cheap? Just practical. Love Jones & Como. Had a couple original Norman/Reebok shirts in black that STAYED black even after 3-4 yrs of wash & sun. Polo stuff bleaches out in 2 months. IDGAF about logos. Dick’s owns Hagen & they sell for BOGO $40 – saw Hogan on sale @ Walmart for $15 just during Back to School days…
    
    I got a 4yr old in the obamaconomy. I’ll wear those “CHEAP” shirts – bright n shiney clean for the summer then give em one last wash and put em in the Salvation box.
    
    You go spent $80+ on a logo – then bum out when you catch it on something & trash it during normal wear. My H or H becomes a new shop rag when it gets a ‘pull’ & I always need a new shop rag 😉

Would love to know how you arrived at the conclusion that DJ is not as marketable as Jason Day for Nike with his reputation as being the most athletic golfer and all.

  Brands have struggled to find ways to create compelling video using DJ, and he carries the baggage of his mysterious injuries and leaves of absences. Day doesn’t have those issues, and he’s younger.

    I think this should be better explained in the article. Though, Day does have one thing in common with the most marketable golfer of all time, TW: an off-colour front tooth. Maybe that is the golden ticket.

    Hasn’t Day been injured twice as often as DJ? Off the top of my head I can think of finger/hand injury, vertigo, and most recently a WD because of his back which has plagued him numerous times.
    
    DJ was out for a leave of absence one time, and sure it was shadowy, but he seems to be much healthier than Day from an injuries POV.
    
    Add to that his athleticism and multi-sport background and the argument that Day is more marketable doesn’t really add up. Whoever signs him could use him across different sports, playing basketball against Lebron or Curry, or swimming against Phelps!

    Ever heard of a comeback, or 2nd chances? DJ just did exactly that, this year, after his struggles on and off the course, by winning a major finally and carrying on with more wins, spurred on by correcting his fallouts of the past. That’s compelling. JDay has had real injuries physical ailments (vertigo, anyone?) that could seriously hamper him in the next few years, and by the time JDay gets to DJ’s age of 32 and beyond, JDay’s career might already be on the wane, if he is not careful with those injuries (but of course, with TUE’s he’ll be ok for a decade more fnar fnar as weak as the PGA Tour is when is comes to those sorts of things).

  Meanwhile, Agassi went (almost -back then) bald, dropped to 200 somethin in world rankings and was still running round takin his shirt off, throwing into stands and doing ads for Cannon.
  
  DJ may or may not ever reach his full potential (which could be best-ever level) ….that argument for another thread.
  
  With so many talented & basically good looking & fit players
  Top rank counts, but personality counts for the ad-man just as much…. DJ should go buy one – or not…

    THAT was a whole different can of worms. He was bi-racial – WITH an Asian market appeal. Jordan was retiring & he was good enough to back it up. If he was a white CC kid – with that ‘off course’ personality – who just won 3 USAM’s he would’ve signed w/ anyone for 8 figures – But NOT 40M as the international FACE of the brand…
    
    I’m not complaining. God Bless ’em…
    
    There is definitely more in play than just the talent – once the ad-men get in

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
