It’s official: Tiger Woods commits to next week’s Safeway Open

Published

on

You can stop sweating, Safeway Open officials. Tiger Woods has officially committed to next week’s tournament in Napa ahead of the 5 p.m. EST deadline for doing so.

Woods had announced in a press release last month that he “hoped” to kick off his 2016-2017 season at the former Frys.com Open, but hadn’t officially confirmed he would until this morning.

Woods wrote on his website at the time.

“My rehabilitation is to the point where I’m comfortable making plans, but I still have work to do. Whether I can play depends on my continued progress and recovery. My hope is to have my game ready to go.”

Apparently, his game is ready to go. And that’s the report from Jesper Parnevik, at least, who told Golf Digest that Woods is “flushing everything” in practice and looks like the Woods of 15 years ago.

The 14-time major winner’s last start on the PGA Tour came at the 2015 Wyndham Championship, where he tied for 10th.

Woods underwent a pair of back surgeries in late 2015, the recovery from which kept him on the shelf for the entire 2015-2016 season. His participation in last week’s Ryder Cup as an assistant captain marked the golfer’s first stint of any length of time in the public eye since the surgeries.

And if you want to speculate about the clubs Woods will play, you can join the legion of WRXers doing just that in this thread.

I have been waiting a long time to see the return of Tiger. I hope he has resolved all of his injury issues and we do indeed see the Tiger of old.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
