Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson to square off in the Philippines for charity

Published

on

Rory McIlroy was slated to compete against Jason Day in “Battle for a Cause,” an exhibition match at Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club in Pampanga in the Philippines on November 29. But with Day on the DL due to a back injury, Dustin Johnson is stepping up to take the Australian’s spot in the 18-hole charity match.

“It should be a lot of fun,” Johnson told reporters at the WGC-HSBC Champions Wednesday. “I like playing against Rory, and I’ve never been to the Philippines.”

“It will be a cool match,” McIlroy said. “I’m happy that Dustin wanted to come and take part. Obviously, it was going to be Jason, and it would have been special for him with his ties to the Philippines. It’s a place I’ve never been. I’ve met a lot of Filipino people along the way that are always nice and courteous and welcoming, and I’m looking forward to that hospitality in Manila.”

The “Battle” will also include a gala dinner and auction the prior evening, November 28. Up for bid at the typhoon relief-focused event: the opportunity to caddie for McIlroy or Johnson for nine holes of the match.

McIlroy was supposed to play Rickie Fowler in a head-to-head match in Detroit last summer, but plans for that duel never got off the ground, and the Day-McIlroy dual was pegged for the Philippines due to Jason Day’s maternal connection to the region.

Johnson was scheduled to tee it up at Tiger Woods Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas during the first week of December, but has relinquished his spot.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
