Mickelson Still Atop at Colonial

After his first five holes Phil Mickelson finally saw a scoreboard and realized he was behind. “I couldn’t see the first five holes how anybody was doing,” Mickelson said. “I walk up to the sixth tee and I see I’m three or four shots back. That was kind of rude awakening.”

Just rude enough that he birdied the 6th hole from 5 feet, the first of seven birdies on the way to a 65 and sole ownership of the lead after three rounds at Colonial. How well did he play on the remaining twelve holes? The 17 foot putt he rolled in at the last hole was the longest putt he made all day. Nice iron game, Mr. M.

Rod Pampling (63) and Stephan Ames (64) are one shot behind afer scorching the course on an almost windless day. Mr. Pampling was on his way to a record round before he decided to imitate me on the 16th and 17th holes. On 16 he pulled off a classic Schuster decelerate through the ball on a chip from the fringe…instant bogey. On the 17th from out of a greenside bunker his sand shot wound up over 10 feet from the hole and presto back to back bogeys. Fortunately for Mr. Pampling he reverted to himself on the final hole making birdie from a foot, leaving him 2 shots short of the course record. “Still finished with a birdie,” Pampling said. “The good taste is back in the mouth.”

Lot’s of low rounds today; Tim Clark had a 64 and is three shots back, Ben Crane (67), Kevin Sutherland (68) and Brian Gay (69) are five shots back at 203.

Mr.Mickelson takes the 54 hole lead into the final round for the 27th time in his career, closing the deal 19 times. Nice record, that. After watching his play today I find it highly unlikely anyone will catch him on Sunday. Of course someone could get really hot, but of the names near the top the only one I see likely to do that is the leader himself. Prepare to Crown Mr. Mickelson King of Colonial. I wonder what Mr. Hogan would think?

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
