Maverick McNealy signs with Callaway

Former No. 1 amateur in the world, Maverick McNealy, who makes his professional debut at the Safeway Open this week, announced today that he is now a Callaway staffer.

In addition, the former Stanford Cardinal announced an apparel deal with Under Armour and partnerships with KPMG and Discovery Land (developers of SB2K hollow, Baker’s Bay).

The 21-year-old favored Nike equipment through college. As of the Dean & Deluca Invitational in May, we had him with a TaylorMade M2 driver, Nike Covert VRS-Tour 3-wood, Nike Vapor Pro irons, Nike Engage wedges, and a Nike Method putter.

McNealy was on the fence about a pro career until August when he announced he planned to try his luck on the PGA Tour. He tweeted this hype video conveying all of the above information in a much more entertaining fashion.

McNealy talked to Golf World‘s Senior Editor, Equipment, E. Michael Johnson ahead of his maiden pro start. His full comments are well worth a read, but briefly, McNealy said he visited Callaway last winter and familiarized himself with the equipment and engineering team. He liked what he saw in the R&D department.

He confessed to being a tough customer.

“I’m probably one of those guys that people think is a pain to work with, because if it doesn’t look or feel just right, I’m not going to like it. So it has to pass that test first. It needs to look slightly open and slightly flat, especially with the driver. With irons, the weighting and weight distribution must be exactly where I want it.”

“Because of that, I’m still using the same irons I’ve had since my sophomore year in college, Nike’s Vapor Pro. It takes a while for me to change. I once got a replacement set that was half a swingweight lighter and it just drove me nuts. It needs to be just right. After that, I make sure the numbers check out. But that is secondary.”

It sounds like McNealy might start the season with his Vapor Pros in the bag, with the eventual goal of transitioning to Callaway irons and a full Callaway bag. It seems he’ll be gaming the GBB Epic driver and Chrome Soft X ball straight away.

      The pro tours only exist because the OEMs advertise on the player’s clothes. I suppose corporate logos on pro golfers is part of their First Amendment rights.

    Pro golfers make more money as walking advertising signs and peddling overpriced golf equipment, and with assorted corporation logos, to the adulating masses who want to feeel what their hero feeeels. So pathetic, and the gearheads just lap it up. Pure exploitation of golf jocks and assorted nerds.

    The way MMwon the US AM was reminiscent of the way Tiger won his last US AM. I’m looking forward to the young MM making waves on Tour in the not too distant future.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.
