Mondays Off: Why does everyone want to challenge the Assistant Pro?!

Published

Caddies challenging Steve to matches seems to be a big thing at his club lately! Do you take them on, maybe teach them a lesson or lose and never hear the end of it? When your round is taking a turn for the worse, how do you get it back on track?

I’ve caddied at a couple high end clubs on Long Island, and beating up on the new hotshot assistant pro is an easy way to move up in the yard and get steady work from certain members. You better be a player though, since some can actually play and you can tell them right away. I’ve only came at an assistant pro for a game if they are a jerk or come in with an ego since they last about a season. I love taking those guys money and hearing the excuses pile up. It’s also fun to play with better players. The other guys in the yard take on the pro since they are degenerate gamblers and will gamble on anything as well haha.

First off, I’ll say that this caddie comes off right away as a punk hustler.

I would guess that a caddie who is perhaps on the course all day long, knows how the course plays, greens break, etc., better than an Assistant Pro, working all over the club (Pro Shop, Range, lessons) does. My devious mind thinks that by issuing an official challenge, it seems the caddie is deliberately trying to set the Asst Pro up. Maybe he’d like to beat the Asst Pro and then start plotting to try to take his job.

The Assistant Pro has nothing to gain by this, other than head off any baiting and taunting the caddie will obviously begin to engage in, which in my opinion, should result in the caddie being fired anyway.

People just like the company of better players and their club guy. Is more to start friendship than to challenge them…

I wouldn’t challenge anybody. I’d ask him out to play to play some golf and watch a good golfer play golf and have a good time.

We also take a look at some of the putters in play on the PGA Tour last week. From familiar favorites to a few surprising setups, there is always something to learn from what the best players in the world are rolling with under pressure.

To wrap things up, I walk through the process of building a set of JP Golf Prime irons paired with Baddazz Gold Series shafts. From component selection to performance goals, this is a deep dive into what goes into creating a unique custom set and why this combo has been so intriguing.
