Forum Thread of the Day: “The conduct of the spectators at Bethpage Black”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Pauly567 who expressed his disapproval of the behavior of some spectators at the PGA Championship. Our members have been discussing the conduct of some of the spectators at Bethpage Black, and whether they feel that their behavior is acceptable, as well as what could occur when the course plays host to the 2024 Ryder Cup.

- Ashley Schaeffer: “I don’t weigh in on crowd issues often, but this is on another level. I am very confused by the motivation of the New Yahker crowd in displaying these antics. Do the loudmouths think they are being funny? Do they not get enough attention in their personal lives? It’s honestly puzzling how one locale can produce so many incredibly annoying fans, and be somewhat celebrated for it. “Well, that’s just the New York crowd, hehehe” is misguided. We shouldn’t hand out passes for being obnoxious based on location.”
- LeoLeo99: “Other than the 18th tee, didn’t hear any hooligans out on the course. They made Willett laugh so much serenading him with Danny Boy on the 18th tee that he threw them a ball. All good fun. Phil gave my wife a high 5 and Tony Finau autographed some stuff for wife and me. Almost no mud on course. Perfect weather. Very organized getting people to/ from the course and in the huge merchandise tent. If you go, you’ll do some walking.”
- Dave230: “There’s no other sport you can get as close to the stars as in golf. If a player hit a ball into the rough, you can watch it happen from two yards behind them; it’s unique. It’s sad how people abuse that privilege. I never like when people compare it to getting abuse from crowds in other sports, it’s done from a distance and in an arena setting, it’s much easier to drown it out. If you’re at work and there’s lots of stuff going on in the office you can work. If there’s one person in your ear talking all the time, you’re going to be distracted.”
- NoodleSalad: “What I find interesting is that despite all this talk about how atrocious the fans are, not a single pro has complained about them in post-round interviews. I’ve read all of the interviews, and no one has a negative thing to say. Odd isn’t it? Although Spieth credited them with helping him sink a birdie putt on 8: ‘Yeah, the crowd is yelling out that no one has got it to the hole yet and DJ hits it, and it kind of breaks less than it looks. I had a read, plus the crowd is hollering that everyone has left it short, so I just went off a little bit lower line than what DJ had, and luckily I was able to see that. You just try to get the right speed for the green and certainly it’s a bonus when it drops.’“

My return to vintage was with the Wilsons, and my first set of hickories were the Wilson Plus Success irons. In our forums, our members have been discussing how much wear is too much wear when purchasing used irons. WRXer ‘con_mon2’ is interested in a used set of iron and kicks off the thread, asking:
“Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this! How much wear are you comfortable with?
I found a set of irons on eBay that I am very interested in buying, but they have a bit more wear than I’m comfortable with. I have attached a few pictures showing especially the wear on the sweet spot on the PW and 9 iron. Maybe you can convince me that I’m being too picky and I should just buy them? Or maybe I should be concerned about the wear? I’m not really sure. They are Ping i230s which came out in 2022 so they aren’t that old. And the seller had this to say about the condition: ‘Good: Normal wear for their age. Excellent playing condition but they have cosmetic wear on faces and soles. Sweetspot wear is visible.’
Beyond the cosmetic, I’d really like to know this: At what point do you start to worry about the grooves being so worn that they have a substantial effect on the shots you’re hitting?”

- rsballer10: “The term you are looking for is “browning” and these irons have some of that going on. They are completely playable, but I’d say they’ve reached their half-life.”
- Nessism: “Those heads are stainless steel. The “browning” that some people reference, is really the yellow shade of the nickel layer under the chrome. When forged carbon steel heads wear through the chrome, the “brown” is RUST. These heads will never rust. People applaud the old Ping irons as being “indestructible”. Those heads had no chrome. These heads, even if the chrome is beginning to wear through, on one head, are miles more durable than the older unplated “indestructible” Ping’s. And even further ahead of any forged club.”

So many douche bags yelling and screaming for some attention. It just perpetuates the stereo typical New Yorker…. a rude A-hole.

The TV coverage definitely would make someone unfamiliar with golf think the patrons are drunken soccer hooligans. You can hear all kinds of random comments being shouted at players, some being cheered for, and others being booed.
I honestly think the 16th hole at the WMI with its stadium seating and Roman Colesium vibe started this drunken boorish “It’s in da’ hole!” or “Mashed pah-tay-tah” or “Baba Booey!” scream fest that rivals a convention of tourette’s syndrome patients for random outbursts.
How many of these people are ‘over refreshed’ is up for debate, and is removing these people a violation of their ‘free speech’ rights?
I think the PGA needs to start airing commercials about fan decorum and start banning people for life from PGA events to get the point across.

The pro’s don’t complain because they don’t want to be the victim of the drunk, look at me jerks in the future. Ask Monty, or Sergio how it feels to be the pro that fans know they can get to.
