Caddies who cleaned bathrooms and did drink runs for no pay file lawsuit against private club

Caddies at Montclair Golf Club have filed a class-action lawsuit against the private club for allegedly violating state wage laws by paying them less than minimum wage.

As first reported by Golfweek, the suit also alleges that the club , which sits about 20 miles west of Manhattan, failed to pay them overtime.

The suit was filed by about 250 caddies that have worked for Montclair Golf Club ranging back to 2019.

The complaint states that caddies at the club are not paid any wages. The caddies have been paid directly by golfers who give them $60 for each golf bag they carry, and usually tip them as well. The caddies work one or two shifts in a typical day, and the most recent increase in the bag fee was in 2016.

The suit also alleges that the course makes plenty of money to pay their caddies a fair wage. The private club charges between 40,000 to 70,000 for an initiation fee and they recently rolled out an $18 million renovation plan to upgrade their facilities. The complaint also states that the caddies are under strict control of a “caddie master” who determines who gets work and when, and requires them to do unpaid work such as setting up for tournaments and make “drink runs” from the course to the bar.

The complaint also alleges that if a caddie is unable to work a holiday, the course will punish them by making them work an unpaid day or have to wait for more work.

All of these alleged infractions are supposedly in violation of the New Jersey Wage and Hour Law.

In the suit, the caddies are asking for all of their unpaid minimum wages and overtime pay, damages, and reimbursement of attorney’s fees.

Most caddies in the NYC area make $100-125 per bag. Most carry two. That is $200-250 per round. Some do two loops a day so up to $500/day cash.
Clearly someone not getting paid by the club should not be required to do jobs for the club. But these guys are basically independent contractors. I don’t see how overtime works (if they don’t want more loops, don’t take them). ALSO, this brings a considerable amount of attention to these caddies. I hope they take good records and pay full taxes.
I hope things work out for the best.

  Exactly. I worked as a caddie for years, ending my run at a top club here in MN that paid $100 a bag + Tip, in cash. We also got free golf on Mondays. We were independent contractors, so therefore we didn’t ask for overtime or benefits. And none of us ever thought to do that, because that would screw up the system. We had no interest in being W-2’d, getting paid in cash with zero records can’t be beat. These caddies are screwing it up bigtime for themselves. They aren’t going to like the outcome, win or lose.

  A caddy shouldn’t be cleaning bathrooms and making drink runs FROM THE COURSE. They’re not janitors or food runners. They have one very important job for snooty wealthy clients who clearly don’t crap gold.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
