Good Monday morning, golf fans, following a wild Sunday that saw a remarkable collapse from Collin Morikawa to allow Jon Rahm to win the first event of 2023.

1. Morikawa blows huge lead

Brentley Romine for Golf Channel…Collin Morikawa was surrounded by some of the most beautiful views in the world. But Sunday afternoon at Kapalua, no one could blame him if the 26-year-old wanted to retreat to a quiet place indoors and get away from it all.

• First, however, Morikawa was tasked with talking through his historic collapse, how he began the day leading the Sentry Tournament of Champions by six shots yet ended it two strokes behind winner Jon Rahm and with his name on a list that nobody wants to be on.

• The first word out of his mouth summed up his emotions perfectly.

• “Sadness,” Morikawa began, clearly still stinging but trying his hardest to keep his trademarked smile.

• He continued: “I don’t know. It sucks. You work so hard, and you give yourself these opportunities, and just bad timing on bad shots and kind of added up really quickly. Don’t know what I’m going to learn from this week, but it just didn’t seem like it was that far off. It really wasn’t. Yeah, it sucks.”

2. Tour gives “some” releases for Saudi International

Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard…”A Tour official confirmed that a “few” Tour members requested and were granted conflicting-event and media releases to play next month’s Saudi International, an Asian Tour event that’s sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.”

• “The official declined to give the exact number of exemptions that were granted or identify which players had asked to play the Saudi International, which had been a DP World Tour event before the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit emerged and created a rift in professional golf.”

• “A handful of Tour players participated in last year’s Saudi International, including world No. 6 Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau and Tom Kim. It’s not known if any of those three plan to play this year’s event.”

3. Keegan Bradley down 30 pounds in five months with meat-heavy diet

Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine…”If it walks, swims or flies, Keegan Bradley is allowed to eat it.”

• “That’s the basis of Bradley’s meat-heavy diet, which has seen him lose 30 pounds in less than five months.”

• “I did a lot of fruit as well,” Bradley told reporters this week at Kapalua. “So, I’d have eggs in the morning, maybe chicken or ground beef and then steak at night. All grass-fed meat is the key, and no condiments and no sides.”

4. Brooke Henderson to TaylorMade?

Golfweek’s Riley Hamel…”Brooke Henderson had a great year in 2022. She first captured the ShopRite LPGA Classic then claimed her second career major championship at the Amundi Evian. Despite the great results, a change is coming for the sixth-ranked player in the world.”

• “According to SCOREGolf (the self-proclaimed voice of Canadian golf), Henderson and TaylorMade have agreed on an equipment deal. The specifics have yet to be released.”

5. A two-sentence recommendation

Max Schreiber for Golf Channel…”At this point, who isn’t on the Tom Kim train?”

• Kim, 20, told reporters Thursday that he spent Christmas with Jordan Spieth’s family, as the South Korean has made Dallas, Texas, his new home. Zalatoris, a fellow Dallas native, was asked about their relationship — and Zalatoris disclosed that he, like Spieth, is also aboard the Tom Kim locomotive.

• “Tom joined Dallas National, where I play out of, and they asked me for a recommendation — or a letter of recommendation,” Zalatoris said Friday after a second consecutive 4-under 69 at Kapalua, “which of course he didn’t need it, but it’s just the protocol-type thing.”

6. Kenny Perry quits golf to care for wife

Jamie Hall for Bunkered….”Two-time Ryder Cup player Kenny Perry revealed he has retired from professional golf to care for his wife, who has Alzheimer’s.”

“Perry, 62, has not featured on the PGA Tour Champions since 2021.”

• “In an interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, the 14-time tour winner said he decided to step away when Sandy, his wife of more than 40 years, was no longer able to follow him on the course.”

• “I’ll let the world know: my wife’s sick,” Perry said. “I’m her caretaker. And I’m going to take great care of her. Alzheimer’s is this terrible disease.”
