WOTW: Scottie Scheffler’s Rolex Submariner “Starbucks” at the 2023 Players

Scottie Scheffler adds another win to his resume this weekend by becoming the 2023 Players Champion. Scheffler cruised to his sixth PGA Tour win with a five-stroke win over Tyrrell Hatton. He accepted the gold trophy while wearing a very popular Rolex Submariner “Starbucks” on his wrist.

There might not be a more iconic watch than the Rolex Submariner. It wasn’t the first dive watch and it isn’t rated for the deepest dives but it is the most popular. The Submariner started life in 1953 and was the first wrist watch with a 100 meter water resistance rating. Since then, the Submariner has had many improvements, colors, and size changes but it still holds much of the DNA from the original.

Rolex just updated the Submariner in 2020 with a larger, by 1mm, Oystersteel case that was very controversial. Half of the Submariner fans wanted a smaller and traditional case while the other half demanded a larger case to keep up with modern sports watches. The case is 1mm larger than the previous version but Rolex did soften some of the edges and sections to keep the elegant look.

The screw-down crown and caseback are also crafted from Rolex’s own stainless steel allow and give the watch its 300 meter water resistance rating. On top of the case is a stainless steel unidirectional bezel that contains a green Cerachrom insert. Cerachrom ceramic is very scratch resistant and the color won’t fade with long exposure to saltwater and UV rays. Rolex fans tend to give nicknames to models with color and this Submariner is usually referred to as the “Starbucks.” A combination of the green bezel and black dial are the same color as the coffee brand’s logo. There is also a “Kermit” version, named after the famous frog, that has a lighter green bezel and is a few years older. The black dial features large white gold hour markers that are filled with Rolex’s Chromalight luminescent material. Chromalight glows a bright blue and is easy to read underwater or just in any low light situation.

Inside this new Submariner is an updated movement that was completely designed and built in house by Rolex. The Calibre 3235 is a self-winding movement that contains Rolex’s Chronergy escapement for more efficient use of the stored energy. The 3235 also runs on a Parachrom hairspring, with 31 jewels and 70 hours of power reserve. Rolex updated the 3235 in 2017 and it is the main movement in the current Datejust, Sea-Dweller, and Deepsea models.

The bracelet on the Submariner is Rolex’s Oyster style, made from 3 flat links of Oystersteel. The flat links, including the end links, are all solid metal for added durability. A folding Oysterlock safety clasp brings the bracelet together and contains Rolex’s Glidelock extension system to dial in the perfect fit without tools.

Rolex Submariners will always hold their value and are one of the safest investments in watches. The Starbucks version is very popular and it is very hard to find one at an authorized dealer. If you can get one from your dealer you can expect to pay $10,800. On the secondary market a great condition Starbucks goes for around $17,500 currently.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
