Rory McIlroy WITB 2023 (March)
- Rory McIlroy what’s in the bag accurate as of the WGC-Dell Match Play. More photos from the event here.
McIlroy says he switched into a Fujikura Ventus Blue TR 6 X shaft in the new TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus driver head to get more spin with his shortened 44-inch shaft. Shorter shafts tend to play a bit stiffer than standard lengths, so he had to pivot from his Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft as it wasn’t giving him enough spin. McIlroy doesn’t like the the look of excessive loft on the driver, so he wasn’t inclined to increase the loft on the head.
McIlroy said on Tuesday that he switched into a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue shaft in his TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus 3-wood at The Players, which sparked his interest in testing the same model of driver shaft.
“It’s nice; it’s a bit more of a lively feel,” McIlroy said of his new driver shaft. “I put (the TR Blue shaft) in the 3-wood at The Players, and it’s just like…I’m liking playing the driver shorter these days, and that black shaft just got so boardy. (The TR Blue) still has got that real stable feel in the handle…I hate looking at loft, so if I’m not playing a driver with more loft, I have to get the spin from somewhere.”

Your article on the PGA website about Rory’s clubs says that he arrived at the Austin Golf Club, which is a different club than the Austin Country Club. AGC is Ben Crenshaw’s baby and even more exclusive that ACC. Did Rory actually play ACG in a practice round, or was that a mistake?

What’s the difference between the 009 and Newport?
Louis

They’re the same. 009M is the tour name for the Newport. Tour Type is the tour name for the Newport 2.

That’s actually incorrect. They’re similar but 009 has thicker top line, larger bumpers, wider body and some other dimensional differences.

Nice to see him get away from the TM Spider and back to a blade similar to those he used to win his majors.

Wish they would release 009 at retail. Really annoys me about Cameron
