Michael Kim explains how he was taxed following French Open victory

Michael Kim has built a reputation on social media for giving fans a peak behind the curtain of life on the PGA Tour as a professional over the past few years.

In 2025, the 32-year-old spoke to GolfWRX on how off-season testing works, rookie financial pressures on the PGA Tour, and explained how club deals work, and this week, Kim has taken to social media to detail how much tax he paid following his French Open victory in September 2025.

Taking to X, Kim explained:

“The winners check at the standard 18% of the purse was $552k. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour wires the money straight into my bank account. Instead of the full 552k, the DP World Tour withholds the 15% tax which was $82k So my payout is $469k. It doesn’t end there…”

Kim continued:

“The fun part, I have to file a tax return in France for 2025.

Not only for the tournament earnings but also a % for my endorsement earnings (on my shirt and hat) based on the days I spent in France. All of which I have to hire an international accountant to file in France. The US has a tax treaty so any taxes paid will be credited against my taxes in the US.”

Adding:

“There’s also my expenses which includes the air, hotel, caddie, coach, and food. That counts against my taxable income. Thanks for reading up to this point!”

Kim finished by stating:

“I also have to pay federal income tax on this so my payout isn’t technically 469k. Just wanted to highlight the international stuff.”

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Kristoffer Reitan held his nerve at Quail Hollow on Sunday to claim his first PGA Tour victory and the $3.6 million winner’s check that came with it.
