14-year-old Guan makes 2nd-straight cut

Published

on

Just because you’re 14 years old doesn’t mean you can’t be a cut-making machine on the PGA Tour.

That’s what the golf world is learning from Tianlang Guan, a 14-year-old Chinese amateur golfer who made the cut this week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans after rounds of 72-69 (3-under).

Guan, who is in eighth grade, earned an exemption to the Masters by winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur in November. He made the cut at Augusta National, becoming the youngest amateur in the history of the event to do so, and shot rounds of 73-75-77-75 (12-over) to finish 58th and win the Silver Cup, which is awarded to the low amateur each year at the Masters.

One of the most talked-about moments at the Masters was a slow-play penalty that Guan received for repeatedly taking too long to hit his shots, which has continued to be discussed by golfers and golf media ever since.

While the logic behind the penalty was murky, Guan is making one thing clear. His development into a top-level amateur has been anything but slow.

This kid is the real deal. He already has the mental game to compete. He could go the way of Michelle Wie although who he could give 4 a side easily.

Most of us could take a clue from his bag, not Gary Woodland’s or Luke List’s bag. I read the forums and listen to some of you guys and the ego exudes crap through cyberspace. I’m 56, use graphite shafts in my irons and bet I could give 99% of WRX’s 2 a side anywhere at any length, especially real tough courses. Whiteboards in x flex tipped one inch, give me a break and you can’t break 80, try swinging within yourself. Your distance is what you get at 80% of your driver and that is it. Not what you hit in Texas in July on a hard ground downwind with a Pinnacle.
Most course don’t roll out like the tour courses, especially in Florida. You would all be better served by carrying it further and not be so obsessed with “lowspin.”

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
