Preview: HP Byron Nelson Championship

Jason Dufner is looking to add another trophy to his cabinet this week, as he defends his 2012 Byron Nelson Championship title where he one-upped long-time PGA Tour journeyman Dickey Pride at 12-under.
Dufner was one of only two players to card four rounds in the 60s last year, relying heavily on excellent play from tee to green — he ranked first in Greens In Regulation and second in Driving Accuracy. So far this season, Dufner has yet to taste the same amplitude of success as last year with his highest finish being a 12th-place finish at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Fourteen-year-old Tianlang Guan is back on the Tour this week on a sponsor’s exemption, and will be looking to continue his storied success. Guan has become one of the world’s most well-known amateur golfers in the last six weeks, becoming the youngest player ever to make the cut at The Masters. He continued his cut streak at the Zurich Classic, where he became the youngest golfer to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.
Louis Oosthuizen has been unable to translate success across the pond in Europe this season. He has three top-5 finishes including a win at The Volvo Golf Champions tournament, but he’s struggled in the States, where he has only had one top-10 — the Shell Houston Open. Many people feel that the TPC Four Seasons will be an excellent fit for Oosthuizen, as it requires length and a skillful touch around the contoured greens, which are both focal points of the South African’s game.
Other notable names teeing it up this week include Keegan Bradley, Matt Kuchar, Jason Day and previous world No. 1 Martin Kaymer.
Course Info
- TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas in Irving, Texas.
- 7,166 yards, par 70
- 2012 toughest hole: No. 3, 528 yard par 4, that demands both accuracy and length, with water running the entire length of the right side to an elevated green guarded by two large bunkers.
- 2012 easiest hole: No. 7, 542 yard par 5, doglegging to the left and elevating from tee to green. Birdies on the seventh will be a key ingredient in a winning recipe this week in Irving as the Tour pros tackle the difficult TPC Four Seasons.
Want To Catch The Action?
Tickets can still be purchased for those wanting to catch the action in person with general grounds passes costing just $75 any day or $150 for access into the “Capital One Club House.” For those of us not fortunate enough to be in Irving this week, coverage will be on Golf Channel Thursday and Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. EST, while weekend coverage can be seen on CBS also beginning both days at 3:00 p.m. and running until everyone is done.

Bogeys on 1 and 18 too! Crazy round, especially on a course that usually ranks as one of the toughest on tour.

Nice post Nick,
I really like the chances of Australia’s Mark Leishman here. 3 top tens in his last 3 starts and finished tied 3rd here last year. He’s never been in better form and this isn’t as strong as last weeks field.
Cheers

Hey Troy,
I would have to agree with you about Leishman having a good shot this week, especially if the winds kick up like they are forecasted to on the weekend – some real aussie weather! Enjoy the tournament, and thank you for reading my article!
