WOTW Time Machine: Henrik Stenson’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore “Dream Team”

Published

on

The 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon was one of the most memorable and exciting Opens in history. Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson lapped the field and battled on Sunday with some amazing golf. Phil shot an impressive 65 on Sunday but it wasn’t enough to catch Henrik and his 63 for a total of 20 under for the Championship. Stenson proudly held the Claret Jug in the air while wearing a very rare Audemars Piguet Offshore “Dream Team” on his wrist.

This special Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore “Dream Team” was a watch that I covered about 2.5 years ago but thought worth covering again with The Open Championship this week. Audemars Piguet has been a big part of golf for years, sponsoring athletes across the globe. The Offshore line of watches has been extremely popular since they were introduced in 1993. In 2016 Audemars Piguet created a special watch for its golf ambassadors with no intention of selling them to the public. That watch was called the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Self-winding Chronograph “Dream Team” and only 11 were made for players like Stenson, Darren Clarke, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood. There was a 12th watch that was auctioned off at an Audemars Piguet charity event on November 20th, 2016.

The Dream Team Offshore was a special Offshore that heavily relied on ceramic. The large 44mm case is made from solid White Super Ceramic allowing the case to be much more durable than your favorite coffee mug. The brushed white ceramic case made of zirconium oxide, stabilized with yttrium oxide is virtually scratch-proof while also being very lightweight. The white Super Ceramic was about 500 Vickers harder than the already scratch-resistant Black Ceramic. The Super Ceramic is not easy to work with and it takes over 12 hours to make the case while the bezel takes 8. Audemars Piguet took over 600 hours to create this ceramic that is not only fade-resistant but also extremely durable. The blue ceramic pushers on the side of the case is the first use of blue ceramic by AP. The caseback is made from titanium and features a display back window to view the beautiful movement inside.

The iconic Royal Oak bezel is made from matching white ceramic and held in place with eight of the classic AP hex screws. The dial is again a classic AP design, Méga Tapisserie, and finished in bright blue hue. Méga Tapisserie is the largest of the Tapisserie textures, Petite and Grande being the smaller versions, and offers a more rugged look and feel. The date window is at 3 o’clock white the sub dials of the chronograph take up the 12, 9, and 6 o’clock positions. A white ring consisting of second markers and polished hour markers, filled with luminescent material, surround the dial. A glareproofed sapphire crystal covers it all and like the ceramic, is extremely scratch resistant.

Inside the Dream Team is Audemars Piguet’s own Calibre 3126 self-winding automatic chronograph movement. The 3126 is based on AP’s Calibre 2100 and they have added a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module to run the timing on the sub dials. Fifty hours of power reserve is available and contains 59 jewels. The rotor is made from 22kt gold and spins on a set of ceramic ball bearings for smoothness. Holding the watch on Stenson’s wrist is a blue rubber strap connected to the case with titanium links and matching titanium pin buckle.

This Royal Oak Offshore was never released to the public so it has no price associated with it. I have searched online and don’t see one that was even offered to the public through a grey market dealer, so getting one is next to impossible unless you know one of the 12 lucky people who have them. If one was to hit the secondary market you have to think that the price would likely be over $100,000.

Testing Lorem Ipsum

Published

on

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
