Tiger Woods will return to PGA Tour this week

Just three days ago we posted an article titled “Tiger Woods is back…to hitting full shots” after the golfer was spotted cranking drivers at his home club in Florida.

Well, according to the golfer’s Facebook page, he’ll return to competition next week at the Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

“After a lot of therapy I have recovered well and will be supporting my foundation next week at the Quicken Loans National,” Woods said. “I’ve just started to hit full shots but it’s time to take the next step. I will be a bit rusty but I want to play myself back into competitive shape. Excited for the challenge ahead.”

When he tees it up next Thursday, it will have been little more than 90 days since his surgery. Further, he’ll only have been hitting full shots for little more than a week. However, as Woods is the master of ceremonies at the Quicken Loans National and likely has to be there anyways, why not play some golf?

After one of the worst starts in his career in 2014, Woods underwent back surgery that sidelined him for the year’s first two majors, but it appears that he won’t be missing another. His return to golf comes three weeks before the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool GC in Hoylake, England, where Woods won the 11th of his 14 major championships in 2006.

Since Woods’ layoff from golf, his No. 1 ranking, according to the Official World Golf Rankings, has fallen to No. 4.

I think he is returning too soon. He should take the rest of the year off, gain strength and mobility and then return. Maybe play some exhibitions overseas before coming back to the tour.

I think he could play very well. For a month all he did was practice putting, chipping and pitching. He is always wild off the tee, but distance will be there. And he will make up any off shots to the green with his highly polished short game.

  Couldn’t agree more legend. I’ve force have enjoyed watching everyone else play golf rather than just watching the Tiger channel. Perhaps the golf channel should be renamed. On the other hand, maybe this website should be called Tigerwrx or Golftiger. With the amount of stories about him, you’d swear he was the only professional golfer on the planet, oh other than that bloke who won the US Open, what was him name again? I’ve had TW shoved down my throat since the day after that finished

The only question I have is he really back or is it simply for the foundation?

I completely called this one. I wouldn’t expect Tiger to do any different coming in and playing in this tournament simply because it is the one in which he publicizes the most.

On that note I’d hope he comes out to both compete and strengthen his game, not just support his foundation.

And is he ready for The Open? I’d say far from, but he has to get his competitive swing back somewhere. Quicken Loans at Congressional is a wise choice. Play the familiar right? All I can say now is, “find your swing Tiger, you’re going to need.”

        You know what, I do care. This game is not reliant on one person. Anyone who thinks the welfare of this game relies on one player is very short sighted. Tiger Woods is not the fix it for this sport. Golf needs more than one person to fly the flag and all you people that worship him are not helping. If there was some balanced reporting on other players I wouldn’t care. But it drives me mad that every second day there is some stupid story about this one golfer that means nothing. Why is Tigers bag sponsor important? It does nothing to contribute the betterment of the game and it’s lame reporting. Why do we need to know every movement of this guy? Why do we ned to know what he had for lunch and where he goes to have his haircut? Stop with the paparazzi reporting and show us some interesting stories. There is a world of golf outside the USA and Tiger Woods. How about we see some of it?

I am really looking forward to seeing a healthy Tiger Woods again. The man only won 5 events last season with a significant injury; many of the “experts” on television don’t have 5 wins in their careers. The haters on these threads need to prepare themselves for what may be 10-12 years of Tiger being a force to be dealt at every event he shows up at. Love him or hate him, Tiger is a transcendent star the likes of which golf has never seen.

    Mr. Palmer has done some amazing things and was the catalyst that golf needed in his era however his impact resonates mainly within golf circles and it’s still burning today. Tiger’s impact has been felt throughout our entire culture, people from all walks of life come to events or turn on the television just to see him regardless if they’re golf fans or not. This interest fuels advertising revenues and that money makes the golf industry move at an incredible pace. Like Eaton said, his impact has transcended the game of golf. Love or hate the guy, he makes an impact no matter if he’s winning by 15 or struggling to make a cut.

      Norma maybe you and Eaton just aren’t old enough to remember, hell I’m really not either but I am familiar with history. Arnold was just as popular if not more so than Tiger during his time within golf and outside of golf. He was IMG’s first client and all modern sport management and endorsement was because of Arnold Palmer. He was celebrated by Hollywood, played with presidents and I believe close to doubled the fan base. Hell most of the products he endorsed weren’t even golf related. Ask anyone familiar with golf’s history, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, hell Tiger himself and they’ll all tell you, know one and I mean know one was more transcendent than Mr. Palmer. Believe it or not Tiger isn’t the first significant star in the game, he’s just your generations first star.

  “save the tour” you must be one of the Tiger flunkies instead of a true golf fan. The tour was fine before Tiger and it will be fine after Tiger. Just like any super star athlete Tiger brought in a lot of new fans, but they are his fans not true fans of the game. Sure when he retires viewership will go down and sponsorship dollars might to but for the true GOLF fan the tour will still be alive and well.

    I take offense to that remark. As a teenager golf for old, fat white guys, then this kid named Tiger Woods made golf cool. I wanted to see what the game was about and learned how to golf right handed even though I am a natural lefty I learned to golf. Now I have a 14 and 9 year old playing with me on the weekends and now entering junior golf events in our area I would be surprised if anyone in my house could name less than 20 current PGA players. I would say we are true fans of the game. Don’t lump everyone together so quickly it shows ignorance and why the game of golf is struggling to gain new players.
    Keep in mind Tiger is the reason quite a few of these young guys on tour decided to golf and not pursue a different sport, and without the purse sizes he helped create the PGA would not be as relevant as it is. If you deny that you’re not a “true fan”.

      I’m not quite sure what your taking offense to. I never implied all Tiger fans where just that and not fans of the game. But like most superstar athletes he has brought in a lot of fans that are his fans not fans of the sport its self. I know because quite honestly I was a Michael Jordan flunky, when he was playing I was interested in basketball but when he retired I lost all interest. I also never discounted his relevance to the sport I acknowledged the fact when he retires viewership will drop and so might sponsorship dollars. I was simply saying the tour was around before Tiger and it will be after.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
