McIlroy to miss WGC-Bridgestone, when will he return?

Published

on

Rory McIlroy announced that he will not defend his title at next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational due to an ankle injury he suffered in early July.

[quote_box_center]“Unfortunately, I will not be defending my World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational title,” McIlroy said. “Best of luck to all the competitors, and I look forward to returning to Firestone in 2016.”[/quote_box_center]

McIlroy’s injury, a “total rupture” of the anterior talofibular ligament in his left ankle, was suffered while kicking a soccer ball with friends.

According to a spokesperson for McIlroy’s management company, there was a 10 percent chance that the No. 1-ranked golfer would play in The Open Championship that took place July 16-19. Of course, McIlroy didn’t play in The Open, and his withdraw from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and failure to address his health status raises concern that he will not be able to defend his PGA Championship win at Whistling Straights on August 13-16.

Rumors have circulated that McIlroy will not return to competitive golf until January, fueled by a comment made by Darren Clarke that was tweeted by Tim Rosaforte. According to other sources, McIlroy’s return for the start of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, which begin Aug. 27 at The Barclays, seems more likely.

What do you think?

I almost forgot that he was injured. I haven’t really noticed that he hasn’t been around.

It’s a footie injury like any other football injury when an ankle is twisted. He can’t return until next year. He’d be silly to, if he did.

He was close to returning at Bridgestone but has opted to work on his game and be fighting fit to defend his PGA Champ at Whistling Straits! Currently hitting golf balls in Portugal in warm weather rather at home in wet and windy Norn Iron…

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
