Wagner Closes Deal at Shell

It was an important victory for Johnson Wagner at the Shell Houston Open for so many reasons.

Putting aside Wagner’s first career victory on the PGA Tour, the two year PGA Tour exemption, the million dollar first place check, the invitation to Kapalua next year, Johnson Wagner now has the opportunity to play next week at The Masters.

Wagner has become quite comfortable at Redstone’s Tournament Course. Although he tied the course record the first day and finished with another low round the second day many questioned if he would be able to hold off the field on the weekend. When the final round began, Wagner held a one shot lead over Chad Campbell. Wagner’s lead began to grow, but on the back nine the pressure started to show just a bit, "When I made bogey on 13 and he birdied 14, it was tight… I wanted to hit a lot of greens, give myself a lot of chances, but I didn’t want the fire at flags. I wasn’t feeling great over the ball," said Wagner. Despite a late charge from Geoff Ogilvy, Wagner finished the final two holes at even par and held on to claim his first victory on the PGA Tour.

Perhaps the most important thing to Wanger is not having to answer questions about Augusta creeping into his mind now that he has qualified. "I think I said on Thursday after the 63, someone asked me about the Masters, and I said I’m trying not to think about it now, but come Sunday if I’ve got a 2-shot lead on 18, I’ll think about it. I get up there and they walk off the tee. I’ve got all this time. I don’t want to talk to anybody because I don’t know if I’ll be able to speak. Yes, I thought about it, and I caught myself quickly and tried to just focus on the tee shot," said Wagner.

Fred Couples who spent last year struggling with back problems seems to be rounding into his classic Augusta form. After rounds of 67 and 66, Couples moved into a T-4 finish and showed better form than he has in a while. Couples said, "I wanted to get with Butch and come here and be able to put it on the course. And I was okay the first day, but then the last three rounds, you know, I did really well… I hit really quality shots, and I feel like leading into Augusta if I can get some good practice Tuesday and Wednesday. I hope to continue it, but not shooting these scores, just continuing hitting the ball well."

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
