Live from the SBS Tournament of Champions: 8 Keys on Saturday morning

As Saturday morning dawns on the beautiful island of Maui, Ryan Moore and Justin Thomas sit atop the leaderboard at 12-under par. Last year, that score after the first two rounds was only good enough for T2, four shots back of an on-fire Jordan Spieth, who went on to win by eight with a 30-under total.

It’s probably unlikely that anyone will match Spieth’s mark this year; Moore, for instance, told the press after his Friday round that it was going to take “20-ish-plus — and you know you’ve got to get there.”

Heading into play on the weekend, let’s look at 8 important keys from the event.

1) One Moore time?

A potentially promising omen for Moore: since 2012, four of the five winners have held the 36-hole lead or co-lead.

2) Clean cards

There were three bogey-free rounds on Friday: Patrick Reed (65), William McGirt (69), and Brian Stuard (71) all kept clean cards.

3) Spieth’s not-as-clean, but bogey-free card

Jordan Spieth (69) was also bogey-free on Friday. Unfortunately, he wasn’t double-bogey or triple-bogey free, carding one of each to go along with his nine second-round birdies.

4) Spieth’s worst shot all year

Spieth has the only triple-bogey recorded through 36 holes. It happened on the tough par-4 No. 17, where a vegetation-filled chasm or “native area” yawns at the front left of the small and tricky green. Spieth lost his third shot into the chasm, after also having to take a drop following what he called “a hiccup swing, trying to just pound one,” cost him off the tee.

Speaking to the press post-round, Spieth also added this: “hitting a ball where I did on 17 with about a 95-yard fairway is as bad a shot as I’ll hit this year.”

5) Another victim to No. 17

Hideki Matsuyama (68) also got into trouble on No. 17. Bogey-free through his first 34 holes and standing at 10-under, Matsuyama made a double-bogey after he pulled his drive into the thick left rough, within about a club-length of the red stakes; from there he found the chasm with his second. Matusyama bounced back at No. 18 with his seventh birdie of the day, finishing at 9-under and alone in sixth place, three shots back.

6) In case you haven’t gathered…

The penultimate hole is difficult. There were no birdies there on Thursday, and only six of them on Friday. One belonged to McGirt, who started off the hole with a drive of 388 yards, the tournament’s second longest so far. Jimmy Walker’s 408-yard blast at the seventh on Thursday is the longest.

7) That’s a lot of rain

There have been nothing but cloudless skies the first two days of competition, but word is that it rained on Maui on 52 of the 57 days before the tournament. That helps explain why the Plantation Course rough is such a challenge this week.

8) The island winds (or lack thereof)

Saturday morning on Hawaii’s own Golf Club Radio Show, Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Mark Rolfing told host Danielle Tucker that a key to the final two rounds might be the island winds — or lack of them. Rolfing said that if the winds pick up, those farther back in the pack might have a better chance to challenge, than if conditions stay as becalmed as they’ve so far been.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
