Forum Thread of the Day: “How is Patrick Cantlay not getting penalized for slow play?”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from TheInfidel, who during Sunday’s fourth round at the Shriners expressed his frustration with Patrick Cantlay’s speed (or lack of it) on the course. Pace of play is a contentious issue right now in golf, and after Corey Pavin’s slow play penalty on the Champions Tour last month, many of our members would like to see officials take action more often on the PGA Tour.

I wonder if Tour officials give some slack on individual times if a group is not out of position if getting them to hurry up would only serve to have them wait even longer to hit their next shots.”
- GMN_02: “Need to start penalizing players. 5% or 10% of the FedEx Cup points the player would earn from the event for every slow play penalty. This won’t take them out of the round mentally like a stroke penalty would but the repercussions of losing those points over a whole season could be meaningful enough to make some players speed it up.”
- IVM: “Here is the answer, if they are slow for more than two holes and they lose a hole then disqualify the group. That will stop slow play.”

My return to vintage was with the Wilsons, and my first set of hickories were the Wilson Plus Success irons. In our forums, our members have been discussing how much wear is too much wear when purchasing used irons. WRXer ‘con_mon2’ is interested in a used set of iron and kicks off the thread, asking:
“Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this! How much wear are you comfortable with?
I found a set of irons on eBay that I am very interested in buying, but they have a bit more wear than I’m comfortable with. I have attached a few pictures showing especially the wear on the sweet spot on the PW and 9 iron. Maybe you can convince me that I’m being too picky and I should just buy them? Or maybe I should be concerned about the wear? I’m not really sure. They are Ping i230s which came out in 2022 so they aren’t that old. And the seller had this to say about the condition: ‘Good: Normal wear for their age. Excellent playing condition but they have cosmetic wear on faces and soles. Sweetspot wear is visible.’
Beyond the cosmetic, I’d really like to know this: At what point do you start to worry about the grooves being so worn that they have a substantial effect on the shots you’re hitting?”

- rsballer10: “The term you are looking for is “browning” and these irons have some of that going on. They are completely playable, but I’d say they’ve reached their half-life.”
- Nessism: “Those heads are stainless steel. The “browning” that some people reference, is really the yellow shade of the nickel layer under the chrome. When forged carbon steel heads wear through the chrome, the “brown” is RUST. These heads will never rust. People applaud the old Ping irons as being “indestructible”. Those heads had no chrome. These heads, even if the chrome is beginning to wear through, on one head, are miles more durable than the older unplated “indestructible” Ping’s. And even further ahead of any forged club.”

The Tournament should put them on notice, maybe have them sign an agreement before accepting the entry. It’s a performance contract and they are contractors.

Cantlay is singled out here, but the topic certainly needs addressed more seriously by the Tour and the PGA. Join the conversation!

This is the PGA Tour, get accustomed to it continuing, after all it’s an entertainment business.

I have a possible solution for at least the viewers. The known slow pokes all should be on delay. Skip all the antics and show us only about the last seconds before they hit their shots. At least we don’t have to suffer, only their fellow playing partners. They are always using tape delays, so just let them always be on delay or don’t cut to them until they hit.

Playing with go slow golfers is the reason I rarely play. My home club is full of them.

They make so much money DQ then all for being slow. Such good equipment these days if you are slow you don’t deserve to be on tour. Essentially ever sport has a time limit.

This is a dangerous situation. The fasters are attempting to discriminate against the slows. Slows have rights. Even though they were born biologically faster, they identify as slows, and their choice should be embraced and encouraged.

When is the last time a slow player was penalized, at least one that is a name player. The PGA Tour is total BS in the fact they ignore the rule, and Golf is suffering for that. Kids watch Golf and see slow and think it is fine, and the announcers contribute when they are alway saying be careful and don’t hit until you are ready, you have to wonder is any of them are really ready.

It kills me when something bothers a player and they step away. Then the announcer says do the right thing and go through the entire routine again. NOOOOOOOO!!!
