Forum Thread of the Day: Is it down or up from here for Jordan Spieth?
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Danny Choo, who began the thread where he predicted that Jordan Spieth’s worst stretch of golf is still to come. After Sunday’s meltdown from Spieth, which saw the three-time major champion shoot a final-round 81 at the Genesis Open, the thread has been lit up by our members who are keen to discuss the reason behind Spieth’s current slump.

In our forums, our members have been discussing how much wear is too much wear when purchasing used irons. WRXer ‘con_mon2’ is interested in a used set of iron and kicks off the thread, asking:
“Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this! How much wear are you comfortable with?
I found a set of irons on eBay that I am very interested in buying, but they have a bit more wear than I’m comfortable with. I have attached a few pictures showing especially the wear on the sweet spot on the PW and 9 iron. Maybe you can convince me that I’m being too picky and I should just buy them? Or maybe I should be concerned about the wear? I’m not really sure. They are Ping i230s which came out in 2022 so they aren’t that old. And the seller had this to say about the condition: ‘Good: Normal wear for their age. Excellent playing condition but they have cosmetic wear on faces and soles. Sweetspot wear is visible.’
Beyond the cosmetic, I’d really like to know this: At what point do you start to worry about the grooves being so worn that they have a substantial effect on the shots you’re hitting?”

- Nessism: “Those heads are stainless steel. The “browning” that some people reference, is really the yellow shade of the nickel layer under the chrome. When forged carbon steel heads wear through the chrome, the “brown” is RUST. These heads will never rust. People applaud the old Ping irons as being “indestructible”. Those heads had no chrome. These heads, even if the chrome is beginning to wear through, on one head, are miles more durable than the older unplated “indestructible” Ping’s. And even further ahead of any forged club.”

The problem is Spieth set his bar way too high when he first got onto Tour. He was making putts from everywhere, and that was never going to last. He needs to stop comparing himself to how he used to be and just enjoy playing golf!

Jordan needs to adopt the arm lock putting method like Webb. As soon as he stopped making every 20 foot putt he was forced to deal with the 3 foot putt. When he started missing the short putts that bled over into his full swing. Jordan is a great putter but the yips are ruining his game. You cannot deny that it works. Webb went from almost dead last in putting to number 6 last year. I hope Jordan gets it worked out and stops working on his alignment.

Appears he is pressing to hard to win and his game isn’t quite strong enough to deliver yet, thus the big numbers on a few holes….he needs patience, but he isn’t wired that way. Interesting to see how this plays out.

I appears his mental attitude is toast at this point. Pressing too hard to try to win, and imploding as his games is still not at full strength, though getting better!
He needs more patience….doesn’t need to win, but finish more steady..

I’ve seen this before with David Duval in some strikingly similar ways–and other ways quite different, but I think Jordan unfortunately has some yips in his swings. Some of his putts are visibly easy to see this but the driver and even irons are very hard to see because of the swing speed. Only results really tell the tale. Good rounds then triples and doubles, that’s what happened to Duvall. I really hope he can get some help for this even though I know from personal experience with this that help is hard to come by regardless if you have more money than G_d.

@juliette 91; agree Jordans problems are mental, but he needs new guidance to get out the rut his mind is in. If he continues to dissect his swing and body motion in general, IT will get much worse. Internal focus is the root of YIPS. Naturally gifted athletes can have a nice ride on their natural gifts, but if along the way they dont learn what keeps their movements natural, it will be a very rough ride, as we have seen with many other golfers.
eg Duval is only one of a large group who shone brightly then worked hard(internal focus) to get even better, only to loose it all.

Do any of you ever have off days? He’s got 3 majors and came roaring back last year at Augusta to make it really interesting. Golf is really hard and some days you just don’t have it. He’s a world class future hall of famer. I think he’ll be just fine without firing his loop or revamping his swing.
