Henrik Stenson told to choose between Saudi Super League money and Ryder Cup captaincy

The announcement of the next Ryder Cup captain is always an event to look forward to, but according to The Telegraph, the selection panel has delayed naming the 2023 chief of the European side until the end of February.

With Graeme McDowell a short-priced favourite to lead the team at Adare Manor in 2027, and Lee Westwood believing he remains a contender for a place on the playing staff in two years time, thoughts turn immediately to the trio of Luke Donald, Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson.

With 11 Ryder Cups between them, any of the three would be an asset to the management at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, but it’s the most experienced member of that threesome that is causing the biggest headache.

Stenson has a contract with Saudi International that means he will take part in the big-money Saudi International next month and is a likely catch for the global Super Golf League, a concept that has caused some consternation amongst the big names.

According to James Corrigan’s Telegraph report, Stenson’s hopes of captaining the European Ryder Cup team in 2023 rest on whether or not the Swede opts to accept a potential Saudi Super Golf League offer, which is believed to be $30 million.

Per the report, a close member of his entourage told the Telegraph:

“It’s complicated not only by the huge amounts on offer.This [captaincy] could be his one and only chance with so many big Europe figures about to come into the picture for future matches.

But then, it’s far from guaranteed he will get it this time anyway, with Luke obviously having a strong shout and the case for Karlsson seemingly strengthening by the day.”

Certainly, as well as the names previously mentioned, for upcoming years there will be strong cases for the likes of Martin Kaymer, hero of Medinah, and Ian Poulter, a Ryder Cup legend and certainly one that would motivate any player.

With Europe wanting no repeat of the drubbing at Whistling Straits, the debate over the most suitable candidate will surely last as long as possible, and, with two very legitimate candidates in opposition, the decision will need plenty of care.

I thought we played for money in this advance world. The Ryder cup is garbage. Take the money. Rory and Phil are always in Dubai. Why not you. Somebody else will get that $30 mill.

The RC captaincy helps generate deeper lifelong relationships and is as close to a ‘once in a lifetime’ thing as you can get. That said, it’s a 2-yr grind that is by all reports all-consuming, and to then lose after all that? I’d take the $30M in a heartbeat.

The SGL is terrible optics for any of these players from a legacy perspective. Either way, you can’t stop these players from choosing the massive payday if that’s what they decide. It’s a super touchy situation. That said, I don’t see the US Ryder Cup Committee disbanding Mickelson if he chooses to go to the SGL. What about Sergio? Ryder Cup Europe couldn’t exile him, could they?

I’m Canadian and don’t watch the Ryder Cup, not even the President’s Cup. If Stenson is the type the person that doesn’t look forward to playing in Ryder Cups in past years, then he should take the money. A lot of other people would love to take his place to be Captain.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
