Morning 9: Kitayama overcomes triple to win | Rory rues tee shot | Ko claims victory

Good Monday morning, golf fans, as a dramatic finish to the Arnold Palmer Invitational saw Kirt Kitayama come out on top.

1. Kitayama overcomes triple-bogey 7 to win

AP report…”Kurt Kitayama let an All-Star cast of contenders back into the tournament with a triple-bogey, only to beat them all with a clutch birdie and the best lag putt of his life to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Sunday.”

“With five players tied for the lead with only three holes left, Kitayama pulled ahead with a birdie putt from just inside 15 feet on the par-3 17th hole for the lead. Then, his 50-foot putt on the last hole stopped an inch from the cup.”

2. Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico

AP report…”Colombian rookie Nico Echavarria seized control with two straight birdies on the back nine and closed with a 4-under 68 for a two-shot victory in the Puerto Rico Open for his first PGA TOUR title.”

“Echavarria was soaked on a sunny day at Grand Reserve, with friends and family dousing him with champagne after he tapped in for par.”

“He tied the tournament record at 21-under 267.”

3. Rory rues tee shot at 14

Colby Powell for Golf Channel…“The Northern Irishman actually had a one-shot lead as he played the 14th. Everyone around him on the leaderboard had faltered, allowing him to vault up said board much more quickly than he anticipated.”

“McIlroy left his tee shot well short on the 190-yard hole, bunkering himself left of the green to a back-left pin. He was unable to get up and down from there, making bogey and ultimately finishing one shot back of champion Kurt Kitayama.”

“If I look back on today the one thing I’ll rue is the tee shot on 14,” McIlroy said after his round. “I birdied 13 and got on to 14 tee and I honestly thought I was still like one or two behind the lead. As I was walking to the 14th green, I looked behind me at the scoreboard, and I was leading by one. And if I had known that, I wouldn’t have tried to play the shot that I played on 14, which was unfortunate.”

4. Ko doubles down in Singapore

LPGA report…”When the skies opened up and rain poured down at Sentosa Golf Club on Sunday at 1:56pm local time, it looked like Jin Young Ko would have to wait a while to close out her title defense. But play resumed 58 minutes later, and Ko did what she does best, finishing strong with two hard-fought pars on the 17th and 18th holes to capture her 14th LPGA Tour victory and first since the 2022 edition of this event.”

ESPN Report: “Tiger Woods won’t be part of next week’s Players Championship.”

“The PGA Tour announced the field for what’s often known as golf’s “fifth major,” and Woods was not part of the group that will tee it up at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Players had until 5 p.m. ET Friday to commit to the event.”

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
