WOTW Time Machine: Tiger Woods’ Rolex Sea-Dweller Deep Sea From the 2013 Arnold Palmer

Published

on

The Arnold Palmer invitational is one of the premier events on the PGA Tour and Tiger Woods won it a total of 8 times! The 2013 tournament was his 8th win and he did so with a 2 stroke victory over Justin Rose. Tiger and Arnold shared a few laughs during the trophy ceremony and Tiger looked to be wearing a Rolex Sea-Dweller Deep Sea on his wrist.

WOTW Specs:

Rolex has been making dive watches for a very long time and while the Submariner is by far the most popular, it does have a more capable siblings. The Sea-Dweller is next in line, diving to 1,220m, and then heavy duty Deepsea, rated to 3,900m. Tiger used to wear the James Cameron Rolex Sea-Dweller Deep Sea for years but after his accident he has gone back to the black dial version. Tiger is a big fan of the water and diving so it is only fitting that he wears the most capable dive watch Rolex makes! The Sea-Dweller was first released in 1967 as the bigger brother to the already iconic Submariner. The Sea-Dweller was the first watch to feature a helium escape valve for diving to extreme depths. I think Tiger was wearing the 116660 reference that was released in 2008 with the new, larger 44mm case.

The case is made from Rolex’s Oystersteel and is the 2nd largest that Rolex makes at 18mm thick. Only the new titanium Deepsea Challenge case is larger. The case also contains Rolex’s Ring Lock system to reinforce the case and support the sapphire crystal during dives to extreme depths. The Deepsea is rated to dive to 3,900 meters, almost 12,800 feet, and the the pressure at that depth is crushing even for a watch. To put in perspective how deep the Deep Sea can go, the deepest human dive on record is 1,082 feet! On the left side of the case is a a helium escape valve for releasing gases that build up during decompression from saturation diving. The black dial on the Deep Sea is surrounded by larger hour markers that are filled with Chromalight luminescent material for a bright blue glow underwater. A date window sits at the traditional 3 o’clock but the extra thick, 5mm, sapphire crystal does not have a cyclops lens over it. Rolex has not yet found an adhesive that will withstand the pressure of diving to 3,900 meters. On top of the case is the 904L bezel that contains a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel. Rolex uses ceramic because it is extremely scratch resistant and will not fade with long exposure to saltwater or UV rays. The sapphire crystal is also thicker, 5mm, to protect the black dial and keep the watch watertight.

Inside this dive watch is the legendary Calibre 3135 movement that Rolex used for about 30 years. The 3135 is self-winding and runs at 28,800 beats per hour on 31 jewels. This movement was considered quite a workhorse and used in many Rolex models including the Submariner, Yacht-Master, and Datejust. The movement should have Rolex’s Parachom Bleu hairspring that is resistant to magnetic fields and temperature changes. The 3135 also gives the wearer 48 hours of power reserve and was finally retired in 2015. The bracelet on the Deepsea is the iconic Oyster style, made from 3 flat links of 904L. Each link is made from solid 904L and even the end links that attach to the case are solid stainless. The Oysterlock safety clasp contains Rolex’s Glidelock system for adjusting the size, without tools, for the perfect fit. These Deepsea watches are still holding their value and if you go to the secondary market to get one expect to pay around $16,500 for one in good shape.

Testing Lorem Ipsum

Published

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
