Black TaylorMade R1

UPDATE: April 29
Things are heating up.  Today, a black TaylorMade R1 showed up on the USGA’s conforming driver list.  This is the first sign that there may indeed be a black version of TaylorMade’s flagship driver in the near future. Interesting to see that it’s a left-handed version.

black r1 driver

I have been told by a reputable source that there will be a limited edition (2500 or so) release of black R1 drivers.

I couldn’t get an answer as to whether the graphics will still be on the crown but I would assume they will be.  Didn’t see any info on this so I thought I would put it out there.  No solid info on release date yet, was told price would be the same.  Discuss.

Ok, tmag rep showed up today with the black r1, has a shinny head and not a matte finish. Looks really nice and he said it will be not limited edition but will public release on June 7, meaning maybe June 10 if we are lucky. Tour guys will be the white head as it is marketing spin is the white head and the black head is to appeal to those r7/r9 loyalist to quote our tmag rep.

I need to clarify my previous post. The black R1 is available for order. I personally know someone who has odered one. I am not sure of the delivery date. I also have been told it is a limited availability club. I apoligize for any confusion.

The black R1 is available currently. It might not be at your local golf shop, but try a Taylor Made Performance center and you should be able to order one. It doesn’t seem like the Players who have seen it are very excited.

everybody is allowed to voice their opinion here but just be ready to get jumped on if your opinion is not the same as theirs. i guess i am one of the few who really like the looks and feel of my r1. it took a few days to get it dialed in and i added an aftermarket shaft. this shaft and head combination makes it the best performing driver for my current swing that i have tested and played… i am a 5 handicap with a 104mph swing speed and i hit it an average of 280 yards but i am at 4000 ft elevation..

  7. Im nobody:(

Wow im not a scratch golfer so i guess i better keep my mouth shut!

They just couldn’t leave the R1 logo off the crown

    No suprises here

TM – tacky to the end

What’s next TM? – the RX01TPZ type B with a purple crown, a green go faster stripe and a 20 way inverted cone, cold melted, adjustable face?

Oh I forgot maybe a dot version would be good……..

Nothing but haters on this page. Don’t worry they are only making 2500 (for now) if you didn’t want one. Thats good, that gives me a better chance of getting my hands on one.
The graphics have not been completely decided on. Only the color. I also disagree with the the R1 not being any better than the R11s or the R9. Maybe you just grabbed a stock stiff club and swung away. Indoors? maybe outdoors was there a launch monitor?
I saw a fitting for a single handicap with an R9 and there was 9 yard difference from best shot to best shot.
And of course there always the comment about how tour players get paid a lot of money to play them just so they can make the claim. REALLY like other companies like Callaway and Titleist don’t pay? Pfffft

theres also a black nike covert which tigers been testing

It’s okay. I personally don’t mind the white color, but I don’t like all the graphics on the top of the clubhead, whether in white or black or whatever.
I like the black look of the Ping Anser driver the best.
Having that R1 on the heel side of crown is lame. It reminds of the the Swoosh on the Nike Covert driver. It serves no purpose, and it is distracting to the eye.

Who cares for the majority of regular golfers the R1 is an expensive dud. It doesn’t out perform the R11s which in turn doesn’t out perform the R9 of course if you’ve got the magic formula ‘correctly custom fitted for you’re game’! I’ve been involved in marketing and it makes me laugh what the likes of TM come out with, don’t get me wrong I even believe it until I pinch myself and realise I as dreaming up similar bull sh*t 20 years ago.

Agree with Ted. The feel and sound of TM woods is just not my taste. Demoed various brands on weekend and Titleist is still my all time favorite and in my bag.

The last Taylormade Club that was any good was the V Steel 3 Wood … my 12 handicapper 2 cents.

      May 12, 2013 at 3:49 am

Totally agree. I still use the V Steel 3 wood. Won’t replace it ever.

No wonder the R1 is now selling fast with low prices.
This model is indeed 10x better to look at. Without the R1, it would be the Cobra Long Tom

And what a success the Long Tom was……………

      May 2, 2013 at 1:55 pm

Hate this driver and the graphics. Make it all black! I am a plus 3 handicap. Titelist is still the best. If players have a choice they play titelist.

    • Ted

      May 2, 2013 at 1:56 pm

I am a plus 3 handicap and have never liked the feel of taylormade and looks. Titelist is still the best. If players have a choice they play titelist.

        May 9, 2013 at 6:10 pm

They ALL have a choice, but money talks…

Agree on Titleist though (and Mizuno)

Though not a fan, Ping make quality clubs too

      May 5, 2013 at 5:08 am

So it’s compulsory to be scratch now in order to be able to have an opinion about how something LOOKS? Idiotic comment

  19. actually good at golf

    May 1, 2013 at 5:24 pm

Wow… why would TaylorMade change the R1? Number one driver on every single tour? Doesnt make sense

    • Scott

      May 2, 2013 at 1:01 pm

Because what they care about are consumers buying them. The only reason it’s the number one driver on tour is because Taylormade pays lots of tour players to play them, just so they can make that claim. However they haven’t been selling that well, because, well, they’re not very good.

      • christian

        May 5, 2013 at 5:06 am

Not to mention the ones being played on tour are a different size, different shape and for sure also different fel than the one being sold to consumers.

      • A

        May 16, 2013 at 1:02 pm

TM pays the least in club contract and individual club payments. That is a fact. I know as I played on tour. R1 is the most used driver right now on all major tours Scott. It must be good otherwise the best players wouldn’t use it!

      • Scott

        May 29, 2013 at 12:55 pm

the R1 is the best driver on the market hands down. It produces the lowest spin, and is the most effectively adjustable driver ever produced.

Anyone have a good link to procedure on how to refinish matte white TM drivers in black? I want one, but not the ugly dustin johnson version.

Being black in color still doesn’t make it a better club for the majority of us than the rocketballz stage 2 driver!

Yes, this is a real thing gentlemen. Talked to a good buddy of mine who is a teaching professional that was contacted by the reps about this club. Already selling if you have some friends in high places.

So it’s not selling at all, if you need that sort of connection! Duh! Selling means it’s readily available at the general consumer level, and it’s obviously not! You don’t see it on store shelves, do you? Stoopid.

I wish they could make it shiny like the R9. And without the 1R graphic.

I’m a 31 year-old male and I turned my apartment living room into a driving range stall – GolfWRXers react

In our forums, our members have been reacting to a post from ‘GolferTodd’ who has turned their apartment living room into a driving range stall. ‘GolferTodd’ produced the following photo in our forums with the caption:

“To the exclusion of furniture. Bachelor life.”

And our members have been reacting to the post in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • MtlJeff: “This is amazing……When i was 28 i lived in an apartment that had my winter tires in the kitchen, i only had one plate and 1 set of knives and forks, and i cooked pasta in a witches cauldron from 1835. And i still convinced a woman to marry me. So i am all for this. In fact this is way better than what i had to offer.”
  • TiScape: “Love it Todd. Go Dodgers!!”
  • imkirby34: “Based on the view out the window, it looks like you’re on the first floor, which is probably a good thing because I’d hate to live below you, even if you have an extremely shallow AoA.  Haha.”

Best classic irons – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing classic irons. WRXer ‘DonaldDunes’ has caught the vintage club bug, and wants to know other members’ favorite iron models that “have stood the test of time or were the top performers for their day.”

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Maine Golfer: “I love a lot of clubs but ’69 Wilson Staff’s are an all time favorite. Easy to hit in relative terms and they look amazing.”
  • Wilsonian: “No surprise from me, but the Wilson K-28 irons, specifically blades with the glide thru sole. I grew up playing Ram clubs, but got away from them as I got older. My return to vintage was with the Wilsons, and my first set of hickories were the Wilson Plus Success irons. You’ll try a lot of sets, but I think it’s a matter of what feels best in your hands, specifically your 7 iron which is the best indicator imo.”
  • Hawkeye777: “Hogan Redlines. Macgregor Nicklaus Muirfield 20th. Wilson Staff Tour Blade. Those are mine, don’t play any of them these days (no real reason to) and didn’t really “collect” them.  The Wilsons I played with for years.”

When buying used irons how much wear is too much? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing how much wear is too much wear when purchasing used irons. WRXer ‘con_mon2’ is interested in a used set of iron and kicks off the thread, asking:

“Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this! How much wear are you comfortable with?

I found a set of irons on eBay that I am very interested in buying, but they have a bit more wear than I’m comfortable with. I have attached a few pictures showing especially the wear on the sweet spot on the PW and 9 iron. Maybe you can convince me that I’m being too picky and I should just buy them? Or maybe I should be concerned about the wear? I’m not really sure. They are Ping i230s which came out in 2022 so they aren’t that old. And the seller had this to say about the condition: ‘Good: Normal wear for their age. Excellent playing condition but they have cosmetic wear on faces and soles. Sweetspot wear is visible.’

Beyond the cosmetic, I’d really like to know this: At what point do you start to worry about the grooves being so worn that they have a substantial effect on the shots you’re hitting?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • rsballer10: “The term you are looking for is “browning” and these irons have some of that going on. They are completely playable, but I’d say they’ve reached their half-life.”
  • Nessism: “Those heads are stainless steel.  The “browning” that some people reference, is really the yellow shade of the nickel layer under the chrome. When forged carbon steel heads wear through the chrome, the “brown” is RUST.  These heads will never rust. People applaud the old Ping irons as being “indestructible”.  Those heads had no chrome. These heads, even if the chrome is beginning to wear through, on one head, are miles more durable than the older unplated “indestructible” Ping’s.  And even further ahead of any forged club.”
  • phizzy30: “Hard pass for me.  I would rather get a new set of DTC irons and would be glad to spend the extra couple to few hundred.”
